"This message is to anyone who marches Mandarins, or instructs the Mandarins Drum & Bugle Corps. On behalf of the Santa Clara Vanguard Cadets, I would like to sincerely thank the Mandarins for their display of "good sportsmanship" this weekend in Southern CA. This weekend (7-8/7-9), there were two Div II/III shows in the LA area, and at the first show, I have to say that it was a totally new experience for me to walk out of the stadium after the Pacific Crest show, and recieve warm handshakes and congratulations from the members of the Mandarins hornline and drumline members.
At the show the next day at Oceanside High School, it was nice to see the Mandarins in the audience during our show supporting us, and when we marched onto the field, the entire Corps stopped what they were doing, and gave a nice applause for us. I have to say that I respect the Mandarins for their support, and for realizing that it is not about who wins, I believe that the Mandarins are the winners for their attitudes. Thank you once again!" -- Nathan, via RAMD
"i must agree with you. last year was the West Coast Sounds first national tour and at our second show we went on right before the mandarins and as we went on they clapped and cheered loudly for us and when we were done they did the same. They are a shining example of class. I have never in all my time seen them act like litlle high school kids in the stands and they are always carrying themselves with dignity. they make everyone feel like they are welcomed even in the most peculiar settings. Thank you mandarins your organization is classy and keep up the good work on and off the field." always a fan, Corey Mahan WCS 99-00, via RAMD
"And THIS IS WHAT IT'S ALL ABOUT LADIES AND GENTLEMEN!!!!!!!!! Thanks for bringing this to the attention of this sometimes cynical and bitchy newsgroup....the Mar Family, especially fellow drum major Greg Mar, are just incredible people. While on tour in 1987, while I wasn't schmoozing around with the SCV gang, I was always running into Greg. HE is another one of those in this activity that does this for the right reason, and I've been a fan of his for a looooong time. GO MANDARINS!!!! Be the shining example of what this activity needs to have more of!!!" -- Ryan Turner, via RAMD

"Mandarins-Impressively big! Very strong performers, although technically not happenin yet. They need to detail what they have. Very cool staging and the weapon book is a challenge. Unfortunately, they seemed to have a drop on almost every toss. Gold flags a bit messy throughout, but written very musically. But overall I thought they were great." -- queennyweenny, via RAMD

"Mandarins - If it weren't for PC, they would be the outright winners for Div.II/III every. It simply amazes me how a corps that has barely enough members to march Div.II can sound like a Div.I corps. The low brass was incredible, and I can't remember the last time the drumline sounded so good. All I have to say is Div.II Champions 2000 to ???" -- William Markley, via RAMD

"Mandarins were VERY strong, perhaps their best corps yet." -- Scott Gordon, via RAMD
"These guys have a great show. I love it! The music fits together very well, and I think the arragments fit the corps size. Actually, it sounds like somethin SCV should be playing. Some people were having fun about the fact that they played something from Star Wars, but it fit into the show perfectly... These guys can put out some sound for 18 horns, but it would nice to have 2 more contras for more of a bottom sound. Only two were out there tonight. I talked to a mellophone player in their corps and she said that their baritone line is full ( for them). The guard was fantastic! They seemed very mature, and I like their book. If I remember correctly, there's a lot of rifle work in the show. The percussion was pretty hot too. These guys will do very well in August." -- Jeff Norris, via RAMD
"Mandarins were awesome but would we expect anything less? I was SO happy to see the hornline doubled in size this year. I agree that they could have used more low brass, but on the percussion side this was the strongest and cleanest Mandarins drum line I've ever heard. The guard was lovely, as always." -- Martha Leeson Garcia, via RAMD
"Reigning DCI Division III champions, Mandarins from Sacramento, CA, took home first place in division II/III with a score of 62.60. Their program, titled "Katachi -- The Essence of Design," features music by Phillip Glass and John Williams. Though the program still has the usual early-season kinks, the potential for blockbuster performances is awesome, especially with featured soprano soloist Fernando Vargas and impressive guard work. The Mandarins took top honors in all captions except in GE." -- Rob Sheiffere, Drum Corps World Staff
"The Mandarins (6s/2t/5b/8p) were extremely impressive. One way to tell how a drum line is playing is to watch their intervals. The more confident a player is with his/her hands, the more s/he can concentrate on his/her marching and vice-versa. The Mandarins' intervals were solid, especially for an early June show, and their playing followed. How good? Try a drum solo in the third song, Anakin's Theme by John Williams, that included cheese-da-chuts (a diddled flam followed by two alternated flams, with a diddle on the second flam). That's material usually reserved to lines like the Devils, Vanguard, Madison Scouts and, recently, the Glassmen. And it was performed quite well. The tenors played a feature up front with "rake" brushes. The bass line plays solid unisons and splits. The snares have good control of their "taps" or low strokes." -- Chris Hollenback, Drum Corps World Staff
