"The Mandarins know championships. With game face on, the Sacramento
group turned up the heat and hit the field with horns blazing. The brass
line continues to set the standard for Division II/III, which the pressure
of finals week seems to only make better. The strong attack into The
Year of the Dragon didn't stop until the final coda of the closing
number." -- Michael Carson, Drum Corps World
"Mandarins--once again very clean, very controlled--but last night I heard
something out of them I had never heard before--Loud! I've never heard loud
out of them before, it was quite refreshing!.............
Capital Regiment, SCV Cadets and Mandarins are very close--the latter two
have better designed shows, I think than CR. SCV Cadets, though, don't have
the hornline CR does, which is unfortunate because that show, with even just
a little better hornline, could do some serious damage in that division.
Mandarins vs CR--once again, Mandarins show is better designed and executed
very well and, I think, could very easily beat CR tonight or tomorrow night,
as could SCV Cadets." -- FrankBeMe, via Drum Corps Planet
"Mandarins: Great performance by the horn line with a very challenging book. The new uniforms are great! They should think about making the jump next year as well." -- RAM, via Drum Corps Planet

"The brassy sounds of British composer Philip Sparke continue to
provide the perfect medium for the power and technical expertise of the
Mandarins. The corps provides a fine example with the melodic assault
of 16th notes in the opening 24 counts of the show. But they don't stop
there. The excerpts from Peter Graham's rhythmic Montage are the
highlight. The power of the percussion section matched up with the traditional
Mandarins' complex brass arrangements to quickly remind fans why they
are eight-time DCI Division II/III champions. Montage spotlights
the musical artistry of the lower brass, often the corps' unsung heroes.
The corps is using a more aggressive visual book than last year. However,
still second to none when it comes to weapons work, it's the Mandarins'
inventive color guard that helped carry the corps to within a tenth of
a point of Magic for the visual performance caption." -- Michael
Carlson, Drum Corps World
"Mandarins.
Glad to see them right next to SCV Cadets, since I really like this show
as well. Wonderful guard uniforms - my favorites of the season. They complement
the corps uni's incredibly well. Note to corps who have trouble paying
for new guard uni's every year: do something like Mandarins do, and you
can use the same uni's over and over, just like the corps uni's. Again,
a great show, ended up in second place." -- wheelerand,

"Though relegated to third place, the Mandarins are improving rapidly
and could quite possibly continue to do so. Drums attained a new level
of performance today, making their usual late-season surge. In fact, all
music caption scoring was strong, with runner-up placements in brass and
ensemble. But the hightlight was the win in visual performance for the
Sacramento crew, spoiling Magic's chance at a caption sweep. Concluding
drill features a long sequence of impressive moves with brass playing
throughout for exceptional difficulty. Baritones take on a challenging
book, with range expanded into an area typically reserved for mellophones."

DIVISION II
88.45 - Mandarins
"The Mandarins performed in exhibition and
their 88.45 was their highest score of the season, including season-best
performances in six out of eight captions. The corps set up their pit on
the sideline, but left of the 50, leaving the center of the field open
for better viewing of the drill.
The color guard uniforms were easily the best of
the evening in terms of complementing the uniforms of the corps -- the
overall effect was very harmonious and cohesive. The richly-colored flags
used during the show enhanced the visual appeal greatly and the guard
drill, consisting mostly of equipment work, was a consistent highlight.
Year of the Dragon started with a standstill
formation and very solid brass playing, drawing applause from the fans.
Readable forms, excellent flag work and superb drum line visuals highlighted
the visual aspect of this first number and the music was excellent, including
a very clean baritone duet.
Montage started with the low- and mid-brass
and another set of richly colored flags. The percussion feature in this
number was a highlight, eliciting an enthusiastic response from the crowd.
The drill included a variety of tempos and was very entertaining.
In a show highlighted by consistently excellent
guard work, the closer, Diversions, was yet another spectacular
display. Rifles and flags highlighted this number visually and the company
front was a powerful statement, both visually and musically. This was
easily one of the most enjoyable shows of the evening." -- Andrew
Wheeler, Drum Corps World
"Tough arrangements
and drill were a reach for the Mandarins, but they were mostly up to the
challenge. The show starts with Philip Sparkes "Year of the
Dragon", with blistering horn runs familiar to drum corps fans from
the 1997 Cadets production. Some of these runs still need work, or watering.
Large triangular flags in the closer provide a nice visual touch. More
impressive for challenge than entertaining to the audience, overall, though,
as the staff is counting on difficulty to carry the scoring; I prefer
a more crowd-friendly approach." -- Wasabi,

"Mandarins: Excellent show by these kids! Very technical, IMO. Magic
won't have a cake-walk to the Div II crown. Although, right now the judges
think differently..." -- ChicagoFan, via
Drum Corps Planet
"Agreed on the
Mandarins show - truly one of the highlights of the evening for me. They
reminded me that it is still possible to have guard uni's actually match
the corps uni's and create a cohesive overall visual, while adding really
rich color with their flags. Their drill was some of the best of the evening
in terms of readability and accessibility, and their music was great."

very impressed with what they do and this year is no exception. Visually,
the corps is moving very quickly throughout a lot of the show. The show
is very challenging and still seemed a bit rough in parts. Knowing Mandarins,
there will be nothing rough about this show come DCI. The thing I love
the most about this corps is that they are never afraid to push the envelope!"

"Mandarins have
another wonderful show. Love the new uniforms, keeping with their Mandarin
heritage. The hornline is powerful and balanced, but the sopranos really
shine. Impact moment is toward the end when the silks in the corps colors
suddenly rise up from the frontline. (I heard an audible gasp from the
audience in Ottawa). I thought they were also a bit flat compared to Friday
and Capital closed the gap on them. I expect Mandarins will stay ahead
of them, though, from here on. Will be a great battle between CR, Mandarins,
Spartans and possible Esperanza and Patriots." --

"Larger the ever, the Mandarins have bolstered
their sound power much more than the size increase alone would suggest.
Horns maintain a quality sound throughout the full range of drill moves

provide a sensitive interpretation of a haunting melody while also performing
ballet steps, a highlighted feature of simultaneous demand." -- Ken

"Since I go
to all the Calif. shows every year, I am very familiar with the Mandarins.
Always a smaller corps, very clean horn line, good package. I am happy
to say they seem to be a notch up this season! Idon't know if they are
bigger, but the horn line has more volume than I can remember, and they
are very balanced. Some of the drill looks very difficult, especially
the final move. Even though they look great, taking Division II out here
in Calif. is no easy task anymore." -- Brad

"Sporting new
uniforms, the Mandarins opener erupts into a flash flood of 16th
notes for 24 counts that would tax the ensemble abilities of any other
corps. The color guard enhances this powerhouse opening with saber work
that keeps the weapons spending more time airborne than in the hands of
the performers.
The brass line is graced with a technical ability and power that leaves
it no peers. The ballad, Montage (sic), provides the lower brass the opportunity
to showcase their talents. This section that is always present, but never
featured, steps forward with some of the finest musicianship oin the corps.
Unfortunately, a phasing glitch betweent the low and high brass toward
the end of this number gave the corps its only notable challenge of the
evening. Never one to ride on the back of past achievements, this year's
Mandarins have turned it up a notch in all areas. And despite its consistent
lead this season, the Sacramento group is performing with the intensity
normally
reserved for championships week." -- Michael

Wow!!! They fielded a huge corps this year, for Mandarin standards. I've
seen them blow away Division II with 10 horns, but this year they had

I think, some Sparke and Holsinger, and pulled it off really well. A great

"Mandarins:
well thought-out show and provided the first "tingles" of the
night. The last ten to fifteen seconds of the show got us all on our feet.
Biggest compliment I can give to this corps: the coworker I brought to
the show, who had never seen drum corps before, got on his cell phone
after seeing the Mandarins and started making plans with his girlfriend
to get tickets for Precision West in July." -- Brandon
Wilson, via Drum Corps Planet
"Although
their repertoire was less accessible to the audience than the other division
II corps of the evening, the brass line's opening statement definitely
ended any doubt that this year's Mandarin horn line will be a force to
be reckoned with. The horn line suffered from intermittent intonation
problems, but periodically reminded the audience that they are ready to
make another run for the DCI Championship with a very brassy sound exposed
by an extremely challenging brass book." -- via
