Music Academy

The mission of the Mandarins Music Academy is to “Give the Gift of Music” to as many children as possible in an equitable way.

At the Mandarins, our core belief is that music education contributes greatly to the mental and social development of children. The mission of the Mandarins Music Academy is to “Give the Gift of Music” to as many children as possible in an equitable way.  Music education and performance provide an emotional outlet of expression for the children that are needed more than ever.

The Mandarins Music Academy began in 2016. While many were advocating for music education at the state and federal level, the Mandarins took a more grass roots, entrepreneurial approach. Just start up band programs and help them grow. So we began with one cute little elementary school program with 11 students at Ehrhardt Elementary School in the Elk Grove Unified School District. The program doubled in the number of schools and children served every year… until COVID hit. We are pleased to reach an agreement with Elk Grove Unified School District to support band programs at all 42 elementary schools beginning in 2022. This program is anticipated to provide music education to over 1,100 students (100 times more students than when we began!)

Every student receives a Mandarins Music Academy t-shirt that they can wear for rehearsals or as a performance uniform.

The class is taught by a Mandarins Music Academy Music Director. They are responsible for teaching two one-hour sessions per week either before or after school. The Music Director is supported by our Music Advisors. These MA’s have an average of 30 years experience teaching in the classroom. They provide feedback and coaching on how the music directors can increase their effectiveness in the classroom.

  • Is there an age limit to join Mandarins?
We do not have a required minimum age, but we do recommend at least 15 years old for auditions. DCI has an age limit for participating members, Drum Corps International’s age limit is 21 years of age with one exception. Corps members who turn 22 on or after June 1 are eligible to march during that year.
  • Do you take video auditions?

  • What Are You Looking For When I Audition?
Auditions will give the staff an idea of your music, marching, movement, and equipment handling skills. Think of your first rehearsal as a chair placement for an honor band rather than an “audition”. We will also be looking at several other factors, including: Positive attitude. Work ethic. Commitment to effort. Ability to focus and follow directions. Ability to learn exercises. Ability to process information and instruction and apply it to exercises. Ability to handle constructive criticism in a positive manner. Interaction with other audionees. Ability to attend all camps and move into Spring Training in the Sacramento area (some flexibility is allowed due to school commitments but this IS our expectation). In addition to an audition in a rehearsal setting, each prospective member will also be interviewed by the appropriate caption head. Our marching member Code of Conduct can be found here. This will give you an idea of our organization’s expectation for its members. Oh yes, in case you think we forgot to mention this: enjoy yourself! Stay positive and don’t lose sight of your goals and objectives. You are here because you enjoy doing this, and the staff does recognize your effort in coming to be here with us. Commitment, dedication, and teamwork are the cornerstones of our organization. The Mandarins are rich with 55 years of tradition and pride. We encourage your participation, and look forward to seeing you soon. “This is long overdue, but I just wanted to share my gratitude towards Mandarins and everyone that’s involved in it. I feel blessed to have been part of something so special. I never thought that I’d be able to feel the way I did after quarterfinals/semifinals because I couldn’t stop smiling after those shows. When you feel like giving up, just remember to hold your head up high and be proud of what you do. We’ve all literally poured our blood, sweat, and tears into this show. I’ve met the most amazing, talented, and kind hearted young adults. Although we’ve gone our separate ways, I’m constantly reminded that Mandarins will always be my home. I’m glad that I chose to age out with Mandarins, and I feel honored to be an alumni. I hope to see everyone again in the future. Until then, just remember………..GET IT! – Van Anh Tran”
  • How can I raise money for tour fees?
There are many ways to raise money for tour fees! We host a crowdfunding campaign where each member can start their own page where friends and family can directly see how much you have raised, and help contribute to and share the campaign. We also offer a season sponsorship program in which you can have friends, family, and local businesses donate directly to your fees on the Mandarins website. Mandarins offers many scholarships leading up to the season. In 2022, we awarded scholarships to FORTY members of the drum corps. These scholarships are funded through our donors and our many fundraising programs, such as Club 63, and the Big Day of Giving, so it is important our members help us share these campaigns, so we can raise as much as possible to give back. DCI also offers scholarships for marching members that you can apply for at dci.org/scholarships.

The MMA band classes will be held at the school facility. Typically the class will meet in the multipurpose room, library or vacant classroom.
  • How do we apply for the MMA?
A very simple application is online here.
  • The student is a beginner to music and doesn’t know which instrument to choose. How can we select an instrument?
The selection of an instrument is a personal choice for the student and depends a lot on what kind of sounds the student enjoys listening to. There is a great video introduction here that can help the students understand and hear the different instruments.
  • When are the classes held?
The classes will be held twice per week either before or after their regular school day.
  • How many students are allowed from each school?
Each school has an allotment of students that can participate in the program. The class size will range from 25 to 35 students per school.
  • Is there a cost to participate in the MMA?
There is no cost to parents for participating in the MMA. EGUSD will cover all tuition costs. The only possible cost is if the student loses or damages the instrument. Then the parents will be responsible for repair or replacement of the instrument.
  • What facilities are needed for the band classes?
The class will need access to a multipurpose room, library or vacant classroom. There will also be a need for a storage closet to hold the music stands and any instruments that the students choose not to take home.
  • Will the students have homework?
Yes! Individual practice at home is highly encouraged. Rehearsal time is very limited in class. Students will excel through practice on their own.
  • Who are the teachers?
The MMA Music Directors are all expert musicians who have a love for music. They are all trained through the Mandarins Music Academy and are employees of the Mandarins. They have all undergone fingerprint background verification, TB testing and have been trained in harassment prevention and mandatory reporting.
  • What is the Mandarins Music Academy?
The Mandarins Music Academy is a program within the Sacramento Mandarins. The program offers instrumental band classes at each of the Elk Grove Unified School Districts 42 elementary schools. This program will provide the students with an introduction to musical performance that they continue on through middle school, high school and beyond.
  • Who are the Mandarins?
The Mandarins of Sacramento is an almost 60 year-old established non-profit organization whose mission is to Transform Lives Through Performing Arts. They achieve their mission through the MMA, Mandarins Drum and Bugle Corps and many other programs.
  • Who will provide the instruments?
Flute, clarinet, trumpet, trombone and percussion kits will be provided for students by the MMA. The only instrument that we cannot provide is alto saxophone because of the high cost. Students are welcome to learn saxophone but will need to rent or buy the instrument on their own. Our instruments are provided by KHS maker of Jupiter, Mapex and Majestic instruments. We want to make sure students have high quality instruments to ensure that practice is efficient and fun!
  • Why should a student participate in the MMA?
Numerous studies have shown that students benefit greatly from music education early in their lives. Music students achieve higher test scores, have better attendance, have a social grouping in school, some have even said that music helps to shape the young brain (reference: Einstein). Not only does music enrich the students’ lives, it also provides great social and academic benefits. And music is fun!
